AMT announces BH Neumann Award winners for 2008
The Australian Mathematics Trust has announced that three mathematics educators will receive
BH Neumann Awards in 2008. These awards are given for service to the
enrichment of mathematics learning in Australia. The awardees are:
Benjamin Burton

Dr Ben Burton won an IMO Gold Medal in 1992. In 1998 he became the foundation Director of Training
of the Australian Informatics Olympiad Program. Over ten years he has developed the training to the point where
Australia has reached one of the top positions, certainly among comparable Western countries.
The team had a clean sweep of medals at the 2007 IOI in Zagreb, including
a Gold and a Silver Medal. Ben had earlier helped train the Australian IMO team and also trained a Melbourne University
team to 6th place out of 54 one year in the prestigious ACM competition for University teams,
Philip Swedosh

Dr Philip Swedosh is the AMOC Director for Victoria and has established a program there which has in his time developed
the program across the state and given access of the participants to special enrichment sessions at
Melbourne University. For several years he was also associated with the Challenge as a moderator and he
has been a member of the AIMO Problems Committee.
Steve Thornton

In addition to Steve’s years as an active member of the Challenge Problems committee, composing
a number of significant problems, he has had a significant impact
on Mathematics Education in Australia in various ways, particularly
through his various terms of President and Secretary of the Australian
Association of Mathematics Teachers. He also served the
Trust by developing the Teacher Enrichment Program.
