Maths, playing the trumpet and chess
Alex Gunning has always been fascinated by number patterns and enjoys discovering how diverse and interconnected mathematics can be.
This year, for the third time, Alex was a member of the Australian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This year he attained a perfect score and Gold medal and, along with only two others, was ranked equal first in the world. In 2013 he was awarded an Gold medal and was ranked 8th in the world, and in 2012 he achieved an Bronze medal. Alex has awards in various other maths olympiads and problem-solving competitions including the Australian Mathematics Competition sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank where he has won four medals.
He would like to study pure mathematics at university and attempt to prove interesting and difficult theorems.
