New in 2014
Students can start the mathematics adventures sooner through the introduction of a new level for the 2014 Maths Challenge for Young Australians (MCYA), Challenge Stage. The new level, Middle Primary, is aimed at students in Year 3 and 4 and students in Years 5, 6 or 7 change to Upper Primary.
Also, students taking the Junior and Intermediate Challenge can now work on ALL problems with a partner also participating in the Challenge.

The MCYA is supported by the Australian Government and available for students between years 3 and 10. The program consists of three open events aimed at encouraging the students to strive for excellence and their full potential in mathematics, Challenge stage, Enrichment stage and culminates in the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO).

CHALLENGE STAGE is an opportunity for talented students, and other students who enjoy mathematics, to develop their problem-solving skills. It consists of four problems for Years 3 and 4 students (Middle Primary Level) and Years 5, 6 and 7 students (Upper Primary Level), six problems for Years 7 and 8 students (Junior Level) and six problems for Years 9 and 10 students (Intermediate Level). Teachers can select a consecutive three-week period between March and June for students at their school to participate and detailed notes and support are provided to teachers.
ENRICHMENT STAGE - 16 WEEK PROGRAM

ENRICHMENT STAGE consists of six different parallel programs run over a six month period with comprehensive student and teacher support materials. Each of the six programs are aimed at different levels of students in Years 5 to 10. It is an opportunity for talented students who enjoy mathematics to formally extend their knowledge of mathematics with course work that augments the school curriculum.

2013 AIMO Sample Paper
Schools that participate in the MCYA Challenge and Enrichment Stages are invited to enrol interested students, seeking a further mathematics challenge, in this 4-hour exam in September. The AIMO is the culmination of the MCYA Challenge and Enrichment programs.
