New Zealand Honour for Gus Gale
![[Gus Gale]](picgale2003.jpg)
Mr NJ (Gus) Gale was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the recent
Queen's Birthday Honours announcements.
This was a very significant honour: The ONZM is a highly ranked award in the NZ honours system.
Gus is the New Zealand National Director of the Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards and has been
since New Zealand first entered the AMC in 1980. New Zealand is one of the largest countries in this
competition, with an annual participation of about 30,000 students per annum.
However this work represents merely a fraction of Gus' contribution to the education of mathematics in New Zealand.
As a President of the New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers and as a senior educator having in the latter
part of his career being a deputy principal and then principal of significant government high schools in the Christchurch region
Gus has been one of New Zealand's most significant educators, and in particular one of the
most significant mathematics educators.
